HepTREC is now
HepTREC at USP!

HepTREC is pleased to announce that it is now a center within the Department of Health Policy and Public Health in the Mayes College at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP). HepTREC's new home will provide infrastructure and support to help us better achieve our mission to reduce the impact of viral hepatitis.

HepTREC will continue to provide programs and services to advocate for hepatitis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services, develop and conduct educational programs, support hepatitis patients and their caregivers, and conduct research to identify improved hepatitis care.

HepTREC's new home, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), was founded in 1821 as the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first school of pharmacy in North America. Today USP is home to five colleges providing education, research, and service in many health-related disciplines. The mission of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is to educate students to become leaders and innovators in the sciences, the health professions, and emerging related disciplines. Building on its legacy as the nation’s first college of pharmacy, it provides excellence in teaching, research, and service. To learn more about USP visit the website www.usp.edu

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Viral Hepatitis affects more than 5 million in U.S. and 500 million worldwide 1,2,3

HepTREC at the University of the Sciences is working to reduce the impact of viral hepatitis.

According to the CDC and World Health Organization,

* One in 12 people worldwide is infected by a hepatitis virus.

* Viral hepatitis infections are the leading cause of liver disease, cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver failure, and liver-related death.

* An estimated 65% to 75% of the infected population are unaware that they are infected with hepatitis B (HBV) or C (HCV).

* Chronic viral hepatitis infections are 3–5 times more frequent than HIV in the United States.

* Liver disease caused by chronic viral hepatitis is now the most common cause of deaths of Americans living with HIV/AIDS.

* Without intervention, the HCV epidemic is expected to result in 3.1 million years of life lost over the next decade.
